Here's what we are asking:

Dear Representative Waxman and Senator Boxer,

There is clear evidence that for more than a decade, fossil fuel companies have been directly funding organizations and individuals whose job it is to sow doubt about the scientific realities of climate change. Much like the tobacco companies who attacked the scientific findings linking tobacco smoke and cancer, the impact of these misinformation campaigns has confused the public and delayed action to reduce climate pollution in the United States.

Like the investigative hearings into tobacco companies that Congress undertook in 1994, we are asking that a similar investigation be undertaken to publicly expose the manipulation of our public and scientific discourse on the issue of climate change.

Sincerely,

[your name]

Background

On April 14, 1994, Congress held an investigative hearing with CEO's of America's seven major cigarette companies. The purpose of the hearing, led by Rep. Henry Waxman, was to investigate tobacco company efforts to manipulate the scientific findings that tobacco smoke was causing cancer.

In a historical moment, each tobacco company CEO stood, with their hands raised, and swore that they did not believe nicotine is addictive.

This hearing changed the conversation on tobacco and health in America forever. The time is right to demand a similar Congressional investigation on climate change.

Like the Waxman tobacco hearings, we are asking Congress to investigate the manipulation and public disinformation campaigns that for more than a decade have downplayed and confused the public on the causes and impacts of climate change.

Take a moment and sign on to our petition that we will hand deliver to Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) and the Chair of the powerful Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, Senator Barbara Boxer -- both have the power to initiate such investigations.

We have an opportunity here to clean up the public conversation and start to see action on climate change by the U.S. government.

PLEASE SIGN ON AND MAKE THIS HAPPEN.

Just imagine a hearing like this, but instead of on tobacco, it is an investigation into the deliberate attempts by the fossil fuel industry to delay action on climate change, by spreading confusion about the science:
